My geothermal unit was installed this fall, so I am just now experiencing cold enough weather to use the system. My unit operates-runs-non stop for up to three hours without stopping even after it has reached temperature setting. Mostly it runs on the first stage. The thermostat says the heat setting matches the inside temp. The outside temp is 42 while I have the thermostat set at 68 inside. Is this normal? If not, could the termostat be defective? Set in the wrong place? Any first hand experiences with operation of the units would be appreciated.

Okay that helps some........
I had a similar question just this evening from a builder who just finished insulating and turned of his open loop TTV038.
By his description the fan keeps blowing and the water keeps running (open loop) so I'm suspicious of a plugged drain or filter cycling the unit on low pressure switch.
I'll keep you posted on that one.
Meanwhile; are you open or closed loop? What's the nature of your soil? Where are you located?
With greater detail we can be more helpful.

Closed horizontal loop in Indiana. Top soil is good and fertile, but at the level they dug a lot of rocks and fine gravel was overturned. Seems like they refilled with the top first and left much of the subsoil on top. It has not settled yet. (Thanks for your help). The house is an 1830's brick federal with about 1600 feet to the downstairs, which is all we are heating. They set the thermostat in the stairwell which has an open landing above. It feels drafty to me when the unit is running which led to my question about thermostat placement.

Thermostat placement sure can matter. While I tell folks that it is not worth moving (when they hope to fix a cold spot by thermostat placement), since it only knows the temp. where it's at and imbalances will be the same; having it where it is affected by unconditioned space is folly.
Ask your contractor to check it out and keep us posted.
Also let us know if auxiliary heat should come on.
