A symbol for degree can be made by holding down the Alt key while typing 167 on the numerical key pad.   Example:    70º

The numbers 1 through 0 on the top row of the keyboard will not make the degree symbol.

Maybe this tip can be useful for a lot of people that post in this forum.

Of course I said Mac. Here we go with an off topic debate, huh?..... Just thought we who use a higher technology for heating would also use higher technology for computers, too. Just kidding. But I do have the iMac at home. It beats the crap out of my new HP notebook (stupid Vista).

Make sure your Num Lock lite is on. If not you get a happy face with alt 167.

alt 248 = 70°

alt 167 = 70º note the degree indicator is larger.

Conclusion: There's an inverse relationship between the the alt number and the size of the donut hole.

it looks like alt 248 gives you the degree symbol but alt 167 is actually the number "zero" 0
- such as 70 to the power of zero

Also, at the top of the edit window for writing a msg (not quick reply) is a drop down list of symbols. The degree symbol, °, is about half way down.

Extended ASCII Character set.  Zero thru 126 represents the standard print characters.  Total of 127 values or 28-1.  Basically 7 bits of binary info you can store using 8 bits which was the standard value originally needed to represent a single character.  Start using the values above 127 (28) you get extended (non-printing) characters.

Just my 2¢ worth.  The cent symbol is ALT-155.

I used to work for a German company which had an Ümlaut in the name - TÜV.  Ümlaut character is ALT-154.  We used that key sequence extensively in our correspondence.

Common fractions are also supplied.  ALT-171 is ½.  ALT-172 is ¼.

Anyone remember ASCII art?

There are 10 types of people who understand binary math - those who do and those who don't
