I have been advised if I want a second meter installed that the common bus wire needs to be extended to the meter socket so they can open it when electrical services need to be interupted. They would break the "blue" wire to the C common on the terminal either at the thermostat or on the geo. I am wondering what effect this would have if the geo was in the middle of a runtime ? would it just shutdown safely ?

Joe, no. Tri-county Electric. they want control if they give you a rate break, I am still weighing the costs to us to do this and it is not clear cut if i will go forward with it. I don't like the idea of them controlling it. |

I think you should try it (I was actually going to look into interuptable service for some of our ConPow custs who don't have time of use rates available). I don't know your rates there off the top of my head (so numbers I throw out here will vary). Many of the Michigan electric companies offer "interuptable service" which in exchange for a discount rate (say 25%) have radiao control panels that allow them to reduce load during peak hours (say up to 20 minutes/hr up to 3 times/day). One of the problems we had in the old days was companies violating their agreements (say going 20 minutes on /20 off more than 3 times/day) and in July customers couldn't cool their homes when it was hottest out. I took to advising customers that if they wanted me to promise cool temps on the hottest days they could a) pay the full rate (no interuptable service) as no one runs a/c in MI to save money, or b) buy a larger unit if I would be expected to promise 70* at 20 on 20 off power availability. Since interuptions are only likely to occur in the summer and I'm convinced that your unit is oversized I think it's a winner for you. Worst case it will take away your 2 stage efficiency 2 mos out of the year and save you money 10....oh and you can always change it back if you hate it. J |

I believe the rate here jumped to 12 cents for normal rate and 6 cents for this special reduction based on the 2nd meters indicated usage. I was also told that wire running through the dougnut would have to be pulled through and looped over and through the dougnut. heres a picture of the current install http://picasaweb.google.com/silvermachineman/GeothermalMisc#5300874097240763858 right now the two wires run through it, they said one had to be looped around it and back to the circuit breakers.. |
