This GeoColumn geothermal system looks great on paper.  It claims to be an advanced hybrid geothermal direct exchange heat exchanger system that is self-contained thus costing less.  Check it out at:  http://www.geoenergyusa.com/column.htm

Looks interesting, any information on pricing and performance as compared to a DX system. Also, where are these manufactured?

Thanks

I really have my doubts about these. This statement is what makes me wonder:

"Compared to other geothermal systems the compact size and shallow borehole of the GeoColumn typically reduces the excavation and drilling costs by over 75% per ton of capacity. As the GeoColumn can be installed with standard caisson or utility pole type drilling equipment (see illustration below), the work is quicker, less expensive and easier than conventional water source or direct exchange geothermal heat exchangers."

We charge $2500 to $3000 per ton for a vertical loop including the loop. They want you to believe that you can install their system for $600 to $800 per ton. I bet the cost of the loop is more than that.

The last time I looked at these, the only system installed was on the guys house who is trying to get investors to fork over cash.

They do not offer much substantiation at this time and claim it will be available in a year or so.
That could be because they are awaiting patents or awaiting results that support their claims.
Either way I have to agree with DD that the claims are a little optimistic.
You still will require some kind of drill and grout (unless you intend to dig a 20' hole with a back hoe).
Remember the key to geo is foot print. In the abscence of significant technology change (such as DX to water source) I don't for see a huge change in footprint (of course I didn't predict On-Star either). Most DX systems could operate with less loop size in many applications but they choose to put the largest possible loop in the ground.
Interesting question though. Particularly as we are getting a lot of interest in oversizing loops lately on this and another site.

Here is an answer to my e-mail from the company with GeoColumn:

GEE is anticipating production of the GeoColmn geothermal HVAC system early to mid 2009.  System specs and operating data will be available at that time but current models indicate very favorable installed costs as compared to conventional HVAC systems.

Initial sales and distribution will be in the New York metropolitan regions, other regions to follow.  As our engineering efforts are based in Tennessee we hope to open your region soon thereafter and we will keep you advised of developments thereto.

The name of the product escapes me, but there was a DX product out of TN a few years back, that performed poorly. Does that ring a bell for any one?

Joe,

You are probably referring to Earth to Air  www.earthtoair.com of Franklin TN.  I know of one installer that was unhappy with the lack of technical support.
