Hi I am new here. I had a geothermal system ClimateMaster Tranquility 27 installed in Fall 2007. System seems to be running fine so far. Recently, I hear a clacking sound (like say a gate being shut) at the end of a cycle. The sounds sounds as if it is coming from the submersible pump for the well. But on listening carefully it appears to be coming from near the grill on the return near the air handler. Is this a significant problem that needs immediate attention? Or should the heat pump be shut off while the sound persists? Thanks for all responses.... Sam

This can be a tough one to diagnose over the internet. Pipes can clank. Metal duct work can clank. Metal objects inside the unit can clank.

If you are up to it you can help pin point the source by isolating the 3 different subsystems of you GSHP system. The easiest first-

AIR-Turn on Emergency heat (if you have it). Let the fan get up to full speed then turn it off. If you get the "clank" then something is loose in your duct or fan system and you should call for service. If not next-

Water- If possible turn on water flow to the unit without turning anything else on. Turn back off and see if you get the "clank". If you don't know how to do this call for service. If you do get the "clank" call for service. If not next-

Refrigerant circuit (inc. compressor)- Call for service.

Make sure shipping brackets were removed from compressor, then do what Joe suggests.
Good luck,

I thought more about this and would add if you get the clank with the air test you should make sure your registers are open and you have a clean filter before you call for service.

Thanks to all of you for the advice.

It may just have been the filters not sitting properly since the sound vanished when I removed the filter and reseated it. As a secondary action, I decided to also change the filters since I had heard that the sound could also be the metallic duct popping.

Once again, thanks! Your help is most appreciated!

Sam
