Tuesday evening we had a yellow/amber comfort alert flash code 4 (locked rotor) on our split 2-ton WF Envision system.

These readings were taken in second stage:

EWT 76.1 f
LWT 86.3 f

Pressure delta is 2.7 (33.7-31.0)

I calculated 6.3 gpm using the above figures and the WF table in the manual.  After being reset, the unit is running at about 91% of spec heat of rejection per my calculations. System was installed 5/2009. We had one other unexplained (I didn't know to check the comfort alert then) lockout in 12/2009 (I think) in heating mode that may have been the same lockout (I don't really know.)  System has run great otherwise.

After resetting the system there have been no other lockouts. The installer suggested they check for loose connections and check the capacitors. They said they have gone through numerous capacitors with other equipment (that uses the same capacitors as the WF) this past harsh winter and summer.

Any help would be appreciated.

The installer's suggestion(s) seems like a good place to start.

geome,

We discussed your concerns with our technical support staff and they have informed us that they have some suggestions.  Please have your contractor contact them for further assistance in finding a resolution.

Joe, thanks.

WF, great. Will do. Do you have a reference number, or specific contact person, or something else that our installer can reference to save them time when they call (rather than explain everything again from scratch)? Maybe someone can put some notes under my account that can be referenced when they call?

Our installer was out this morning. The WF suggestion was a straightforward, fast, fix.

We have had only 2 lockouts in approximately 17 months, so it may take some time for me to know for sure that the issue is totally resolved, but I'm pretty confident it is resolved due to the suggestion by WF.

I assume WF does not want details publicly posted for liability reasons, so I will respect that.

WF technical support was extremely helpful to our installer. Thanks WF for participating in geothermal forums!

P.S.  From what I was told, this only applies to Split Envision systems that experience a lockout with a low pressure/comp red light on the door led and a Comfort Alert flash code 4.  If you have this problem, you should contact your installer and have them speak to WF tech support.

Great to hear and kudos to WF for jumping in to help. One of these days I'll have my WF up and running and I'm glad to see such a great level of support from them for their products!

Tech support is a wonderful thing and WFI is probably the best at it. FYI The comfort alert is used to monitor the amp pull on the windings of the compressor digitally by sensing current meaning it's there or is not. It is also used to shift compressor to high capacity when Y2 is present. Sometimes it doesn't "see" smaller current flow well and causes lock outs as you now know. Most GSHP manufacturers do not use the Comfort Alert (a Cpoeland product) to keep cost down.

geotek, your understanding of the Comfort Alert seeing the current agrees with what our installer told me. Where were you 1 week ago? :-)

Yep. Fortunately I was home and able to talk to the tech in person. Good experience for the installer too!
