I've had a TED in service for a full electricity billing cycle. I had to work through fairly common noise issue with TED but having done so I'm now a big fan. TED and the utility meter were in agreement to well within 1%.

I put a 2nd TED MTU on my geo system, but that has been less interesting than the whole house reading. It only took a few evenings / beers to be able to easily discern what loads are running at any given time. Well pump, Geyser, Clothes washer, dryer, dishwasher, fridge, freezer, heat pump, TV, and house base load (day and night) are all easily teased out of the 'footprints' software that comes with TED.

Just this morning after making coffee I happened to click into TED and saw short 2kw spikes every few minutes - I jumped up, knowing that meant I'd left the kettle on a range burner on simmer...pre TED I'd find that out when the kettle ran dry and began to stink.

A week or so ago I mentioned to my wife that I'd run a load of laundry through the washer. She said she'd put it into the dryer. Just before bed I checked TED and asked her about the wash...turned out she thought she'd changed it, but TED showed she clearly hadn't.

HPWH and geo heat pump show clearly...TED calculates power factor. My WF Envision 038 exhibits a PF of about 50% when just the control transformers are energized. With the ECM blower on low PF=55%. With the compressor running in low stage PF rises to 98%, assuming TED can be trusted on this.

I'm about to deploy a TED at a client's house to chart the relationship between electric tankless water heater operation and a natural convection desuperheater marketed for ASHPs. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the thing works - homeowner was able to take a hot shower during a power outage last summer having forgotten that the power was out...meaning no tankless operation. Desuper had apparently heated its buffer enough so that HO was able to shower without tankless boost.

I've a customer who employs one and recommends it.
Does seem a little addictive......folks can't seem to take their eyes off 'em.
Must be extra fun for an engineer....all those wavy lines......

I just ordered the TED5000 yesterday. I have been using a TED1000 for about a year to track the HP usage and measure other circuits like my hot water heater and well pump. BTW I was reading the latest WEL doc and you can now add the TED5000 data into your WEL WEB page. I like this solution over the Wattnode product.

Great write up Curt. Thanks. I was on the fence on adding the TED 5000 to my house, but I think I will go forward with it. I have Solar PV and Geo and would like to track whats going on.

I plan on needed at least two MTU's, 1 for the whole house load and 1 for the solar PV.

Question: Do you think additional MTU's are needed on the Geo and my Heat Pump water heater? Or is the footprints really able to learn those variable load devices with enough precision to get a decent idea or when they are running? The Geo is a Tranq 27 two stage with variable speed blower and the HPWH (GE smartwater) seems to ramp up and down through its operation. Just curious what you think. Each MTU adds to the TED cost. If I could get by with some decent understanding of what is running without adding the extra MTU's that would be fine for me. Its the ramping up and down of those devices that makes me leary of relying on the TED software.

Thanks for any comments or suggestions.

I won't extend my endorsement to Footprints' load profiler. You are correct in suspecting that compressor loads are problematic for that feature because they vary a bit. I have $30 Readington hourmeters on the Y1 and Y2 lines ans P3 Kill a Watt on my Geyser HPWH.

I'm about to attempt to prove a relationship between an Olive Tree Energy heat recovery unit, ASHP operation and electric tankless unit consumption using a TED, and realizing that the tankless units have 2 circuits each, needed to prove I can wrap TED clamps around conductors for two circuits and have them be added...it worked.

You'll be able to tell from TED what is running, but the Readingtons may be more cost effective than $85 extra TED MTUs. Another issue is congestion in the panel - be careful that the act of reinstalling the panel face doesn't lean on the TED clamps such that they partially open up.

Curt, thanks for the suggestions. I may just get the 5002 model and do just the solar and whole house and see how things go with the footprints. I can always add another MTU later or go with something else as you suggested.

As Joe noted, the wavy lines are mesmerizing to an engineer...

This morning I happened to check it, saw spikes and realized I'd left the tea kettle simmering on a range burner...normally I don't figure that out until the bad smell of hot dry metal wafts up into my office.
