Hi all! I will soon be moving into an older family home which has not been updated since it was built. Besides doing some cosmetic renovations to the interior, I want to change the heating cooling setup. The system in place now is an oil powered boiler system. This was installed to replace a wood powered stove that heated both the house and water. The house has an approximately 12'x8'x6' root cellar in the back corner of the basement which has a concrete ceiling block walls and a dirt floor. My question is could I dedicate this this root cellar to hold the loop for a geothermal heat pump system? Any thoughts or adive is greatly appreciated. I would say the constant temperature in the root cellar is around 55 degrees. Cheers! Keegan

Keegan it is unlikely you will find enough BTU's available in a root cellar to heat a home. However if you enlist the aide of a local designer, perhaps they can find out for you.

That root cellar won't be 55 once one starts extracting heat out of it.
In general I "never say never" but the chances of this working are very very small.
