I am considering going to a Geothermal system to replace my Oil fire Heat Hot water base board system and separate air conditioning systems for upstairs and down stairs.  I am considering a DX Geothermal system but not sure as I am brand new to this technology. I am having a hard time getting local contractors to respond to request for information. Just curious if maybe contractors prefer new construction versus installing these systems in existing homes?

Older houses are harder to predict in terms of heatloss, much more difficult to install (in your case, the baseboard was probably designed for much higher temperatures), and sometimes the ductwork does not match. They are energy hogs, usually fit well for geo because of there energy needs, but one has to usually update the distribution system, which adds to the costs and effort. Thus older houses require more skills, and usually offer less profit due to longer installment time, and many more surprises. We do about 50/50.
