I am planning on putting in an air source heat pump to assist in heating my Pool. Any recommendations, thoughts, suggestions.
The only model I have found so far is from WaterFurnace |

Raypak, Laars and Lochinvar all build heat pumps for swimming pool heating. |

Air source pool heat pumps are a "mainstream" product rated and listed by AHRI. There are hundreds of models available. I second DJ's remark that Aquacal is a good brand. Air source heat pumps are a great option for typical pool users who only want to use the pool during mild and warm weather. Their performance falls off dramatically in applications where client wants an 80+ pool while outside air temps are 50s or less. |

I've only seen/serviced Hayward and Summit. Preferred the Summit (curiously now owned by Hayward). Curt is right in that most units won't run at less than 50f ambient. That makes it hard to stretch the season with ASHP. j |

Florida code requires a COP of 4.0 at 60F. The highest I recall reading at Ahrinet is 4.3 at 60F. That results in a COP of 6+ or so at 80F. Northerners might argue that pools needn't be heated when its 80 outside; Floridians think differently. Some units reverse to cool the pool in really torrid weather. Much below 50 an ASHP will have trouble operating without defrost, and all but the tiniest pools would have load much higher than what an ASHP can deliver at 50.

Pools usually open at Labor day, and stay open until memorial day. Nobody really goes in the pool here until it is 70-80 degrees F out there, and the pool is in the upper 80'. We go into the pool the heat up, you go there to cool down! |

Open on Labor day and stay open untiil Memorial Day? What, no swimming in June, July and August? What are the heat losses per SQ FT on an 85*F pool of water in Buffalo in January? Sorry - just couldn't resist! |
