Recently I had opportunity to go look at the performance of my WaterFurnace GSHP units and thought I'd share it here.

The situation is I'm preparing to be on the 2011 DFW Solar Home Tour this coming Sat. (Oct. 1).  Since I'm including the subject of geothermal HVAC, and since I have a very accurate means of measuring HVAC performance, I thought I'd go look at my real-world EER and COP performance (in first stage) to include comment to my visitors on what kind of performance can be expected from WaterFurnace equipment.

A reference document I prepared for the tour is available here: PDF Doc.  At about the middle of the document, you'll see a page titled Geothermal HVAC Performance.  Here you'll see that, for last month (Aug.), about at the middle of the intense heat wave we had here in the Dallas area, my 5 ton unit's EER was 21 (or 24 in SEER terms).  And for this past Jan. (2011), my 3 and 5 ton units were both right around 5.0 COP.

If I adjust my measured EER number to account for deviations from test conditions WaterFurnace uses, it comes close to 24.  Thus, my 5 ton unit, 4 years after installing into a hot attic in a Dallas environment, is performing right at the advertised 24 EER.

In the winter time, my conditions here are already close to WaterFurnace's COP test conditions, and thus no adjustment is needed, and therefore my units are performing right at WaterFurnace's advertised 5 COP.

My WaterFurnace equipment includes 2 Envision units, 3 and 5 ton, both 2 stage, no antifreeze, and no aux heat.  I also use WaterFurnace's IntelliZone air zoning system, and my thermostats are WaterFurnace supplied.  My summary is: the WaterFurnace equipment performs excellently, and performs per WaterFurnace advertised claims.

If you're interested in a lot of operational detail on the equipment, it's here: http://www.welserver.com/WEL0043/ .

BTW, for those of you in the Dallas - Ft. Worth area that want to personally visit, and for those of you wanting to look at example homes, here's info on the DFW Solar Home Tour
this coming Sat., Oct. 1st. For my residense, I'll be covering solar PV, geothermal HVAC, CFL lamp replacement, home automation control, and energy savings monitoring.  This is my first opportunity to be on the tour.

There are 16 homes total - my residence is one of 4 in the City of PlanoHere's a short film clip summarizing all of the homes: 5 minutes video (also accessible from the DFW Solar Home Tour web page).  My home's at the 1:43 mark.

If anyone has any questions, just holler.

Best regards,

Bill
