Our HVAC system is 25 yrs old and finally needs replacing. We set it at 65 at night and last night the system would not raise the temp higher than 63. I was told we have an R-22 system, and a Trane heat pump. Our HVAC company tech that we have been using for maintenance for the last 10 yrs diagnosed a stuck faulty reverse valve and told us it would be $700 to replace it +refrigerant replacement costs at $100/lb. He recommended a new system, heat pump and indoor hot air circulator. We were supposed to leave for a 3 wk vacation in FL yesterday but had to postpone. The Tech who came said we could set it on Emergency Heat in the meanwhile to keep the house warm and that wouldn't cause any problems. However, ever since we put it on Emergency Heat, the system has not stopped running. We have it set at 70. It is 30-40 outside here in VA. It just keeps running and running. Why doesn't it shut off when it reaches the set temp? Can we leave it that way and go to FL? We will turn it down quite a bit but are still worried it will run the whole time we are gone. The company rep suggested a Bryant or Goodman system with a 13 SEER for replacement. Help!!! I am an 61 yr old female and doesn't know what to do.

Unless the parakeet needs to be kept warm, I think I would turn the system off and wait in Florida until spring:}

I don't know the demand on your auxiliary, but you could dial down to 68 and see if it shuts off/comes back on. If it does then dial it down to 50 and be on your way.
