We bought a house about 3 years ago with an older geothermal heatpump. After about 3 years of piecing it together( and hiring people that didn’t specialize in geothermal), we replaced the unit with a water furnace 3 series with a company that does only geothermal. We had 2 50 gallon water heaters tied into the previous system. One was about 1.5 years old and the is older...maybe 5 years? Immediately after having the new system installed, we lost all Hot water in all the showers and most of the faucets. Cleaned the screens on faucets, shower heads, etc. Just a ton of sediment kicked up to where I was having to clean the screens after every use, or couldn’t get hot water. Geothermal installers came back out and drained the tank. Not much came out. The basically said “not our problem. After having multiple plumbers decline to work on the plumbing because they weren’t familiar with the set up, had a plumber come out and replace all the cartridges in the showers. That worked for about a week until they were all clogged again. Geothermal installers came back out again and installed a water heater filter that is supposed to catch sediment as it leaves the final tank, before it’s dispersed throughout the house. It hasn’t made a difference. I have a plumber coming back out again tomorrow to take out my shower cartridges so I can clean them out. My showers barely trickle hot water but it’s full pressure on cold. It will work again for a week and I’ll be back to square one. Has anyone experienced this? Neither the water furnace installers or the plumber has any ideas. I’m 45 days and about $1500 in to trying to take a hot shower with any kind of pressure, and no one can tell me what needs to be done.

The filter after the tank should be catching the sediment. However, you probably still have sediment in the lines after the filter. You will still have problems until you get the sediment out of the lines. You might have to blow the lines with air to clean them out. Sometimes just replacing a well pump will stir up sediment for a while. You might also need to pump out the well to get it clean. Also if your pump is cycling on and off while the heat pump is running, that will also stir up the sediment. Clean the lines, clean the well, and stop the cycling.

Thanks so much for your help. So cleaning the lines would be a plumber. As for the well pump, is that underground? Does every system have one of those? Or is that dependent on the type of loop you have? I know they flushed the underground lines when they installed the new unit. Sorry if I should like an idiot. I tried to look it up but I’m seeing conflicting info.

What were the results of your last plumber visit?

You talk about sand in the faucets, which makes me think you have an open loop system that uses a well pump? But later you said "type of loop", which makes me think you have a closed loop system. i don't see how a closed loop could be causing sediment issues?

Sounds like a valve is closed somewhere.....
