Iron mud in well pipes all the way to geothermal unit and probably out. Is there a process to clean the iron mud out of the pipes of an open loop well system? I clean the coils within the geothermal unit 2x a year but the pipes outside of the unit have some buildup. When moving some of the pipes due to other needs, the service found that the pipes had a significant amount of iron mud in them that you could scoop out with your finger. How can I clean this out? Thanks! 1) Where you live -near Chicago; 2900 sqft heated space 2) Heat loss/gain calculations for your home -I don’t know exact. Fully reinsulated with foam and new windows. 3) Brand, size (model), age and type of heat pump -Climatemaster Tranquility 27 and Tranquility 27 split system 4) Type of loop field (open/closed/vertical/horizontal) size and design parameters. OPEN LOOP WELL SOURCE. 250’ DEPTH INTAKE 5) Average cost/Kwh of electricity and consumption. 13.7cents/kWh 6) Entering and leaving air temperatures (EAT, LAT) measured immediately upstream and downstream of the heatpump -not relevant to question 7) Entering and leaving water temperatures (EWT, LWT) measured at the geo system -not relevant to question 8) Percent of load to be covered by geo and balance point. -Heating is 70%, cooling 100% 9) Installer's assessment of your systems operation. -not relevant to question 10) Projected operating costs, actual operating cost and previous heating and cooling costs. ELECTRICITY PRICE WENT UP WHILE GAS PRICES WENT DOWN SINCE INSTALLATION, SO SAVINGS WERE NOT AS GREAT AS ANTICIPATED. Need solar

I would say increase flow but that will also pull more in from the well. Take some in the glass and see if Acid will dissolve it and then make sure there isn't anything in your system that would be hurt by acid.

Wonder if you could make a loop and pump out and into a drum and pump water with like a one hp pump to get it out.

Just ideas that popped in my head....good luck...

Sounds like you need to develop the well. Cut it loose at the well head or open a large valve or multiple valves until you get the pressure below 20 PSI. This will produce the max flow your pump can supply. Let it run for hours until the mud clears up and then some. Turn the pump off for 30 minutes or so and then pump it hard again. If mud/dirt comes up every time you start the pump, then wait 30 minutes and restart the pump multiple times until the mud clears up.

You might also look into the Sulfur Eliminator. It dumps a gallon and a half of aerated water down the well every hour, which gets rid of the iron in the well before the pump sees it.
