Whether it's an air source or ground source that is used....in both cases when running in heat mode we are using the AIR or GROUND to ADD heat to the REFRIGERANT. Is this fundamentally Correct?

Correct. Heat is extracted from either the soil (via expensive holes and water pipe system) or from the air.
