I'm homeowner with Climatemaster Tranquility 27 installed in 2008. System has been trouble free for 14 years. Recently thermostat went blank. Technician from original installer found that 24 volt breaker was tripping. After a lot of trouble shooting he found the capacitor was only carrying 25 micro farads and it should be 35. Replaced capacitor. Same problem. Unplugged wiring harness from second stage of Copeland and system started and ran fine. Further checking revealed that the thermostat was wired incorrectly calling for second stage at startup. He switched two wires on thermostat. He said I needed to replace the system with a new Tranquility 30 and I received a quote for over $11,000. I don't know how scroll compressors work but the system has been holding set temps on both heating and cooling for past 3 weeks. I feel the system won't be able to keep up when it's 90 outside this summer. My questions are:
1. Should it cost that much to replace the unit? I've looked at the dimension sheet and it looks like the only change would be on the water loop connections as the 30 has internal water controller?
2. Is it practical to replace the compressor on a 14 year old system? I should have mentioned it's a 2 ton system. What is ball park estimate of cost if this is possible?

My Tranquility model number is TTV026AGC01ALKS.

Wife and I are pushing 80 and will be downsizing soon but I don't want to leave a new owner with a bad installation. Since the tech left the system has been holding temps rock solid. In past 14 years there has always been about a 2 degree swing. I can't understand why starting on second stage would cause this as it would seem to me the the thermostat would sent the same temp offset to the second stage as it is now sending to the first stage but I'm not an HVAC person.

Any advise would be appreciated.

What thermostat do you have? Some track usage over time and you can compare to last years usage or in the fall.

I have two units in my house now and one has a bad Copeland scroll compressor that is locked up. I have the new one but haven't had a chance to change it.

Do you have a way to measure the temp in and out of the ducts and also the in and out of the water in the field loop?

Checked temps at 4:05 PM Ground loop 55 IN 65 OUT Outside temp 82 Air out register 48 Room temp 70 Doesn't seem logical to me that loop in temp is lower now than when outside was 27 but that's what it measured with same probe in same place.

Thermostat is Climatemaster programable either ATP32U01 or ATP32U02. Only history I know of is last 5 faults and there are none. After Tech left I bought two probe thermometers and outside was 27. Water in was 61 and out 49. Room temp 70 and register temp 89.
