I have a geothermal system in my new home and part of the system preheats my hot water in my electric hot water heater but this  is only in the summer when I use the air.  In the winter this is not the case.

My question is, could I set my hot water heater to its lowest setting (about 90F) and use an instant-on electric whole house water heater to take it the rest of the way?  I do not have gas to the house and I know that the gas instant on heaters are very efficient.  You need preheated water for the electric system to be efficient.

Would this be a saving since I would only heat the water to about 90F in the electric heater?

Thanks,

Vince I investigated electric tankless water heaters.  While they are more efficient then convential the cost to upgrade the electrical service extended the pay back period beyond what was pratical.

I am interested in re circulating pumps that operate by push button or even motion sensors.  They pump the water in closed loop to and from water heater and give you almost instant hot water at shower head without running 8 gallons of hot water down the drain.

I retrofitted my home with the chili pepper, it's effective, but loud, and the install isn't as clean as I would like

I'm building a new home this summer; what other options could I use with whole house tankless water heaters?  I realize I'll lose some of the energy efficiency, but I also don't want to waste water waiting for the hot water.  In addition, I have a HE clothes washer, and when washing hot cycles I need hot water immediately, otherwise the washer doesn't get hot water.

I found this Laing UCT-909.  Thoughts?  Where does this get installed, near the hot water appliance, or anywhere on the recirc loop?

thanks

Legionella (legionaire's disease) is another reason to keep the water heater cranked up. Look at this healthyheating.com thread http://www.healthyheating.com/bb2/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=421&hilit=legionella&sid=197e8d2478894eb05d2da18a518ef487
