I got an HVAC quote which included a Trane CleanEffects air cleaner as an upgrade. Does anyone have experience with this type of air cleaner? How does it compare to an Aprilaire?

What do you think is the best type?

We've got one in our new house. I've never been able to verify it's actually doing anything. The little monitor on the front never goes to red for cleaning. The boulder catcher inside does clog up, it can be cleaned by rinsing. I like not having a filter to replace.

I used to have a Tran air cleaner in the house, and, even though the house was as tight as possible, I could never verify that it was doing any good.  I did a lot of research as to other options, and found several.  We are currently using an Aprilaire system and are analyzing those results currently.  On the other hand, my sister-in-law uses a whole house furnace filter that is made for reducing allergens and cleaning air, so you could go that route, as well.
Try not. Do. Do not. There is no try.
