Hello all,

I'm curious to hear people's opinion on when it is appropriate to use an Outdoor air kit for a wood stove. i understand it is basically a must have if you have a wood stove in a super tight new house, but what about a more conventional house?

Our house is not exceptionally tight, but it also isn't a leaky old thing. It's a well built (by the previous owner who was a meticulous carpenter and builder), but it is conventionally built with FG in the walls etc. I've spent some time with spray foam tightening up the basement and attic and around windows etc. We get most of our heat from a Hampton H200 wood stove, which we love. Our backup heat is a TT Prestige (sealed combustion) but it basically never runs anyway.

But I wonder, would an outdoor air kit make sense for us? It's easy enough to do. Would it help keep the house from getting so dry (which i understand is a function of drawing in lots of dry, fresh air, which is probably atleast partly a result of the wood stove running all day every day.

anyway, anyone have some experience to share? Is there a certain tightness (ACH) at which you'd recommend it? I look forward to learning about this.

Best,

~Fortunat

I have it installed on my now 20 year old house and would not go without it. Think about it running a woodstove without outside air supply is like running a exhaust fan all the time. Your blowing warm air out and replacing it with cold air. Kind of defeats the purpose.
