I live in the highlands of southern Costa Rica. My area is subject to a long rainy season and a shorter very hot and dry (no rain) season. I want to replace the gutters and under roof "ceiling" and the skirt that covers the area between the metal roof and the ceiling so that the attic area is enclosed. I am looking for economy, low maintenance, easy-to-install and long lasting material for the ceiling. I have been using a local fiberboard type product called fibrolit, but even when painted with anti-mold, anti-algae paint it is soon covered with green and grey molds, mildews, and algae. The inside of the material is not waterproof, so when a leak develops in the metal roof and drips to that portion of ceiling I get very ugly stains. We are in an earthquake prone area, so I don't want anything that could come off in a shake and be heavy enough to kill someone. The current system of fibrolit panels is nailed to wood furring which runs inside the iron skeleton supporting the roof. I'd like some aesthetically more pleasing, no requiring painting, and cheap that will also hold up through the rather sudden lurches in temperatures between rains and from sunny early morning to chilly evenings. Also that will hold up to high UV radiation, months of constant moisture, and high winds. Is there such a magic material? White would be nice, too. If there is such a material, where can I get it?
