How do I vent an exposed fastener hip roof, with four equal wall lengths, a square. The hips are equal pitch so the roof will come to a point. I will have lots of soffit venting, but what options do I have for upper roof?

A few options I can think of:
1. Leave a several inch gap in the sheet metal where each hip meets. Install a roll type mesh attic vent material such as TAMKO Roll Vent between the metal ridges at the hips (helps keep bugs and wind driven rain out). Then install a large metal ridge cap where the hips meet. This would allow ventilation along the peak of each hip.
2. Build a fake chimney at the peak and cover with a vented chimney cap. Install screen wire mesh to keep bugs out.
3. Install a couple of whirly bird turbine vents on the backside roof plane just below the peak.
4. Install all or a combination of the above.

How about a cupola?
Or, how about a square peaked cap on the roof that is raised just an inch or two kinda like a low profile cupola. It could even be roofed with the same metal as the main roof. If it were 4' square, raised 2" and covered a 2'x2' hole it would yeild about the same amount of ventilation as 20' of regular ridge vent.
What is the pitch of the roof? What type of building is it?

hip vents are notorious for leaking but mid-america's hipmaster wins praises. http://www.midamericacomponents.com/PDF/roofing/rm_hip_Install.pdf
If you scroll to the end of this pdf you will see an illustration of a hipmaster on a metal roof. Dunno if would work with your roof tho.

Roofing nails and staples driven into decks at angles not perpendicular to the deck.

Matt, I came up with about the same thing as you. It is my home, shop and storage. 4/12 pitch roof.
Greencleaning, I have no idea what you are talking about.
