Natjwest,

Thanks for posting about Newwood.  I make an effort to find and use new materials.  It is very helpful to me when I find postings about new materials, products and alternative building systems.

If the price of Newwood is reasonable, then it might be an ideal replacement for OSB skins for SIPS.  No worry about termites.  No grain to worry about orientation and crown bow like in dimensional lumber.  Not limited to normal board sizes like OSB.  Being able to balloon frame two stories with one tall SIP without the worry of a hinge in the wall like in fibercement SIPS.  I think as this company develops this product they will discover more uses for it.

Hey Alton,
Newwood caught my attention, as well. I received an email from Larry Potvin, VP of marketing today.
They are just getting production started within the next 60 days. Once they have the bugs worked out of the production process, they will do the testing for structural loading (MOE, etc.). They 'think' the numbers should be favorable, and are excited about the possible use in SIPS mfgr. If the price doesn't kill them, I will be excited also.

Wes,

I wonder if NewWood is manufactured in batch or continuous runs.  Often times, batch runs will limit boards to a few predetermined sizes.  Using continuous run metal skin SIPS has spoiled me by being able to get a length up to 50'.

I mentioned NewWood to a SIP company engineer today.  He was immediately interested in this new product even if the sizes were similar to Hardie Board.

This engineer told me that I could avoid the hinge effect by staggering the seams in a tall wall by 4'.  This would involve cutting a few 4' x 8' SIPS into just like in decking a roof so the seams will not line up.

I used 100% recycled plastic dimensional lumber on one small project below grade and it worked better than treated wood.  So NewWood should be even better.

I wish more people buy these things rather than buying Chinese garbage.
