Hi, I have a airtight house (approximately 1,10 air changes per hour at 50PA pressure). The needs of fresh air for the house are approximately 80 CFM. I live in Quebec, Canada. I actually have a Venmar HEPA 3100. I love the HEPA filter, wich is very good for indoor air quality, but unfortunately the heat recovery effectiveness of it is so so...from what I know approximately 40%. I also like the fact that it has a total debit of 210 CFM or so, since it also recirculate part of the inside air too. The two ducts that go to the outside have 6 inches diameters, and the two that go inside have 8 inches. Do you think that this HRV cost a lot since it's heat recovery effectiveness is not really good? Do you have another HEPA model that would fit our needs and could be retrofited with our actual ducts system? Thank you very much!

It may be something about the addition of the HEPA filtration which makes it difficult for them to get certified as an HRV. Your model is technically an air exchange unit. But, the good news is that there are newer units that have HEPA filtration as well as more efficient heat exchange. There is a THH1.0 unit from Venmar that would technically work for your house, but you would probably lose the luxury of recirculating the larger volume. Venmar has a larger HEPA3.2 model as does Broan with it's GSHH3K, but as you already noted, there may be some (small) changes necessitated in the ducting or venting with those. Have you asked your HVAC guy about this issue?
