Hi I'm currently finishing my Masters degree and I'm working on developing a thesis to start a new business that would allow consumers, that have an interest for DIY home improvement projects, to make their homes more energy efficient in a very friendly and interactive way. I would really appreciate it if you could help me by filling out a short survey that shouldn't take more than 10 minutes to finish. Here is the link: http://nyu.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_3OUCBK266zXooLy Thanks for your help! EM

OK, I did the survey. There were a couple of questions asking why one chose the bulbs they did, but the choices would have been much improved by an other with a tell box. I choose bulbs of a certain type because sometime they are the ONLY one that fits the application I am using them for. For example, if I need an encapsulated bulb for a certain type of lamp, I have to use CFL because there are no LEDs that will fill the purpose.

Mostly I use CFLs unless there is no CFL that will fill the purpose. They are almost always the most cost effective.

Same here Jon, though I do hope that LEDs will start showing up in more configurations, and become a bit more affordable over time. I have several chandeliers and would really love to get some nice LED light bulbs for them. There are some CFL ones available but they are so clunky. I, of course, would also prefer not to mortgage the house to provide bulbs for those chandeliers :o)

LEDs would benefit from some type of new socket where the fixture becomes an effective heat sink for the bulb. Or maybe just do away with removable bulbs and build the LEDs in.

I have one major issue with LED bulbs: I can't find ANY that aren't made in China! Until that changes, I'll pass on using LED bulbs in my home.

Don't look now, but you can't find many CFLs or incandescent light bulbs that aren't made in China either.

If that's a major issue for you, plan on a future of living in the dark, eh? ;-)
