One would have to calculate the total costs of electricity to run the fireplace. I am going the same route with an electric fireplace vs. gas. I chose electric because:
- I don't have to punch a venting hole in my wall
- I don't have to run a gas line through the homes walls
- It's much smaller than a gas fireplace
- I don't have the energy loss of the fireplace when it is not in use due to the "reverse chimney" effect
- I don't like having a propane tank sitting next to the home and having it sit in 90F Arizona sun during summertime
