Anyone any idea if strawbale walls can hold back the earth in place of tyre filled with earth walls? Early stages of research and came across this site.
Thanks Sam
There are a lot of variables here that would need to be known. How much earth are we talking about, above grade, below grade, what kind of earth/soil, etc.?
The question would essentially have to be answered by an engineer.
Where is this home going to be built?
As you probably know, there are pros and cons to building a strawbale home. If you are in a rural area, you will have some issues with mice and rodents getting in. They usually don't go anywhere but they will get in and most likely build a nest, go back out, or die in the strawbale. The other issue is moisture of course, especially if you are bringing raw earth up to the home, your humidity and moisture levels can be through the roof.
Lastly, if you ever get a fire within the wall it can smolder for days and weeks. Not enough oxygen to start a huge fire but just enough oxygen to keep it smoldering for a long time.
