I think it depends on how rigid the posts and the sidewalls, in particular, are. Metal cables need to be able to develop a certain amount of tension to maintain appearance. If your end posts are adequately fixed, you may be able to have the cables pass through the posts with some success, but then the mid-span posts contribute little to the assembly.

Check with your local code official before spending any money.

I bet that the corner/end fiberglass posts would be a whole lot stronger if you poured them full of concrete.

As Alton said, check your codes. Many A.H.J. won't allow any railings that allow kids to climb over them, and rightly so! Cables provide the perfect ladder!
