I will be replacing two doors in the next year or so. Both of them have doors in front of them. One is a storm door facing east and the other is a screen door facing west. I'm pretty well-shaded but I thought that these doors help improve the heat less of the doors they're in front of. I sometimes hear people say that storm doors and screen doors aren't really necessary anymore because newer doors have improved weather-stripping and much more insulated. Do you guys agree with that?
If that thinking were true, I can't really think of any reason to install a new screen or storm door other than my dog likes to sit in front of them and look outside. I could just as easily let him outside to sit on the porch on his chain.

I can't help but think they would make a difference when the wind blows.

Standard exterior doors are crappy when it comes to keeping out both water and air, plus they get worse with age. Anything you can do helps, especially good quality storm doors.
