Full house renovation, not looking to cause moisture problems inside walls or ceiling. Planning to use 1" foam board under sheetrock on ceiling, blown in insulation above. Walls will have sheetrock with unfaced fiberglass batts in stud bays, plywood sheathing then 2' foam board and vinyl siding. Question is do I use 4-6 mil plastic vapor barrier under sheetrock or will this cause a problem with condensation/drying in the wall or ceiling. House in southern Vermont.

No and yes. Plastic on the inside of the wall - and this includes the interior foam - when you also have exterior foam means that the wall cannot dry to the outside or the inside, so if you have a leak it will turn into a huge mold problem. Scratch the interior foam, use 4" on the exterior and use a "smart vapor barrier - like MemBrain - instead of poly on the interior.

Sound bite summary of the best options - "breathable to both sides, more so to the cold side" or "so much cold side foam that condensation is usually avoided". With NO poly and unfaced foam, your ceiling matches the former and 2x4 walls match the latter (in zone 6). Even if you use 2" foam instead of 2' foam :-). Be sure to air seal well.

Thanks, yea 2" outside of walls, proofreading seems lacking. Seemed to me that no vapor barrier on inside would be the best. Foam board between the sheetrock and ceiling trusses seems the way to get a thermal break from the framing.
