Yes, it's a kit.  So what?  The basic point is that there's ways to build homes for pretty much anyone of any skill level.

I'm guessing the huge water tank is because the local ground water is too risky to use because of all the Fracking and or oil line spills.

A log home in an area nearly devoid of trees - why not if that's what you want?

The high and dry plains where he built might shrink those logs up a bit quicker than usual, but if he allocated for that he should still be able to open his doors and windows.

My first drafting job was freelance for a log home builder back in the early 1980's in Michigan. I still love log homes.

I trust he put a lot of termite shielding in, just in case.

I should note that such maps dealing with insects are always being updated because of climate change, the bugs are marching further north each year.
