Typically, the life expectancy of a water heater is about 8 to 12 years. Of course, that will vary with the location and design of the unit, quality of installation, maintenance schedule and water quality. Before it starts leaking... There are horror stories about water heaters that have had their bottoms drop out from corrosion and have then destroyed places. Perhaps drain and flush the tank to see what's in there and then make a decision.

If your water heater is leaking, then that may potentially require replacement as well. If you turn on the hot water and you get it for a short period, the water heater has an issue. If it tastes metallic, you need to replace your unit as the water is becoming unsafe to drink. If any electrical appliance will make some noise, then you need to fix or replaced, depending on what the problem is.
