I have 2 rooflines, about 1000 sq ft facing South, 1000 facing North and 500 facing East & 500 facing West. I am going to replace the 20 yo shingle roof soon & want to consider a metal roof that generates electricity.

Google tells me about a lot of foreign sources, I strongly prefer to buy American made! (I know - I am a relic!)

I am looking for starting points from folk who actually have a Metal Solar Roof or who install them. Turns out there are a fair number of Google hits when I search on OHIO METAL SOLAR ROOF, but when I get to the web sites they have little to say about Solar Metal Roofs.

There are lots of options. If you are replacing the roof with a metal standing seam style roof, option 1 would be a laminate module glued down in between the standing ridge. The metal pan width needs to be a minimum 16 inches. The most common module is made by Uni-Solar, 197.1" long by 15.5" wide with a rated power of 124 watts. There are lots of roofing mfgs. which incorporate these units into their standing seam roofing material. One such company is Fabral. Option 2 would be to use S-5 connectors mounted to standing seams and then rack conventional modules to these clips.

All good info above.  You are not a relic, there are more out there.  I too try very hard and buy American.  Then I choose imports based on how I feel about the countries practices.  If you look, there is US made solar out there.  I am not current on who,but it exists.

If you search "thin film solar and metal standing seam roof" you will get tons of hits. We are also looking at this for a 6kw system. Please post the costs you find.
In WI, there are several dealers and we had a quote of roof + 1.5KW for around $12,000. With that times 4 = $48000 and then the 1/3 fed. tax credit, regular panels seemed crazy. But we will see as we get further into this. Marathon roofs and Culper (SP?) in WI are the 2 we have chatted with.

In this solar roofing guide you will learn about pros and cons of metal roofing with laminated thin-film solar PV panels manufactured by Uni-Solar Ovonic, or simply UniSolar which is an Energy Conversion Devices company/brand.

UniSolar thin-film solar panels have been specifically designed to be install with a standing seam metal roof and have a nominal width of 15.5 inches, which fits perfectly into a 16″ standing seam metal roof panel. With a special butyl adhesive backing, the installation of thin-film solar panels is very simple and fast.

I am interested in this area of solar power as well.  My initial research was that the thin film solar's output was half of the traditional solar panels.  But then I read some stuff that said though the output is less it (thin film) is MUCH more efficient when there is any cloud cover so in the end the thin film works out to be very efficient.

hey... are you looking for a way to save energy costs? How about going green? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you should consider solar power roof shingles. What kind of new-fangled gimmick is this, you ask? It is probably the smartest investment a homeowner can make!

Unlike regular solar panels, solar power roof shingles look just like regular roof (asphalt) shingles. But the secret ingredient is that they contain a special photovoltaic substance in the form of a thin film on the top. The PV film allows solar power roof shingles to transform solar radiation (light) directly into electricity. Because solar power roof shingles look just like regular tiles, they blend into the roof without resulting in any aesthetic disruption of the overall appearance of the building.

Metal Roof - Reflects solar radiant heat, which keeps your roof cooler during the summer. During the winter, metal roof will shed snow and ice, which will prevent ice and snow build up and keep your roof free of snow. Metal Roofing is considered to be a green roofing material, which is contains significant proportion of recycled metal materials.

I'm a solar system designer/ installer that services your area.

Are you looking for a metal roof, where the metal roof is the solar module? Or a solar system that mounts to your metal roof? Currently there is no metal roofing that is also a solar module. The above website is just taking a thin film laminate and adhering it to a standard standing seam metal roofing panel the solar laminate does not "become your roof" but is certainly blends in with your roof more than a traditional solar array. There are pros and cons between thin film and more traditional crystalline modules (crystalline modules are the framed solar panels), but currently we are seeing crystalline modules giving the most cost-effective options.

Are you looking for a DIY solution, or having a system installed?

For anyone wondering how this story ended...

I was hoping to get a metal "solar" roof. And I was hoping for a "Made in the USA" label.

I ended up with asphalt shingles. They are made in Indiana. Many folk made many good arguments for metal - and it is what I initially was interested in, but in the end the numbers did not work for me.

I also ended up with solar panels above the shingles. I got Sharp NU-q235f4, Made in Tennessee. The array is 24 235Watt panels.

It is supported by Enphase inverters which I understand are not made in the USA, but are ARRA compliant. The system came online around 12/10/12.

So far I am very happy with it. You can see the energy production at:

GreenSWOhio - could you give me a rough idea on the cost of the system before deductions for tax credits etc? Installation cost and material cost.

Thanks,
Rosalinda

Rosalinda - I paid a bit under $25,000. I expect I could have had it done for less and I could have certainly paid more. But I am very satisfied with the array, its location, its robustness, and the daily reporting. I expect to "pay" for the array with savings in under 10 years by selling SRECS and saving on electric bills.

Yeah, I have good experience with Solar Roofs. I would suggest Solar shingles to you. They generate electricity as well as cover the roof. These really worked well for me
