I had a piece of land with about 250' of height difference, and I looked into such a system to make use of extra solar photovoltaic energy that I was generating. My calculations were showing that you needed a pond rather than a tank to generate any significant amount of energy. That is, you need a lot more volume of water than you could store in a tank. You could certainly do it as a science experiment.
