Hello,

Where can I find information on the cost of windows. I’m interested in larger fixed frame windows, 48”x48”s, 48”x60”, 48 x72”, or larger.  I know there are a lot of variables in terms of price but does anyone know where or how I could figure a per/sq ft cost?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Shawn

You need to get in contact with a local window dealer. Prices depend on a blue billion variables, making it where only someone with experience and a pricing guide in front of them could give you an accurate price for your situation. You might find a price catalog online, but local dealers can usually cut you a break off the listed price.

Andersen has retail prices on their web site but those are just for the basic window. They don't show option prices. And, if you're buying a whole house worth of windows Home Depot or your local Andersen dealer will quote you significantly less than retail.

On television I saw an owner-builder discussing large fixed windows that they installed themselves. The reasoning was that since they were fixed they didn't really need a pre-made frame. So they got double pane glass sheets and installed them basically against a wooden buck and sandwiched with spray foam and trim. There are a couple of things which aren't clear to me, and I'm not sure if you could do it this way in every area though.

Jelly,

I wonder if moisture will get between the panes of glass and then leave a stain when it evaporates like when the seal is broken on an insulated glass window.  I doubt that homeowners would have the ability to factory seal the glass.

I have heard of people using this technique but they installed the glass in such a way that they could remove one or more panes for cleaning.  This type of installation would let air circulate between the panes which makes me wonder how efficient it was.

Were they making their own IGU from 2 lites of glass or did they buy an IGU and set it into a wood frame?

The former is a bit hard to do, but the latter can be done if care is taken with gasketing and sealing.

IGU means "insulated glass unit" perhaps? What they were doing was setting already insulated double pane glass units into their own wood frame. So no, they were not using two raw glass panes and making their own insulated unit.

You wouldn't be able to get all the nice insulating features like argon, low e, ect. if you built a window just using a couple regular pieces of glass. ( I know that wasn't what they were doing on the show, I was just mentioning.)
