I hear the r-value of a thatched roof is R-40 and they can last up to 100 years. All natural too.
Well?

Thatched rooves are quite common in the UK. It might make sense to find a UK-focused forum and ask your questions there. One problem, of course, would be finding someone in the States who can do a thatched roof. There's bound to be people; you'd just have to search around. retrobolted.

I'd like to read up on that, if you can remember your source!
A few US-based "thatched" roofers:

Endureed
McGhee & Co.

has DIY info
Steven Fuller
does some amazing roofs. Not thatched, but WOW.
