My garage is well insulated (2x6 construction), has good windows, and is heated (radiant).  I am finally waking up to the fact that I am losing a fair amount of heat from several sources.  One of the main cuplrits seems to be the sealing on the garage doors.  Each door has the rubber weather stripping on the outside, but still seem to leak a fair amount of air around the edges.  The doors face west and we often get NW winds that will actually make the weatherstripping vibrate loudly.  Does anyone have a good solution to making these doors more airtight?  I was thinking about inside weather stripping, but haven't seen a solution that wouldn't interfere with operation of the door.

I installed garage doors for a short time.  There were some occasions that I used 2 layers of the vinyl weatherstripping to make up for a poorly framed opening.  I wonder if you could do the same and overlap the door more.  I would take the sealing flange off when I used 2 for aestetics, but I cannot think of a reason you would have to.    You would need some fairly long trim nails to so it.

I would think this could keep some of the infiltration down.  On the con side, it is not as attractive and makes the opening a little smaller.

If you try it, I would close the door and tack it in a few places after you get the fit you are after.  Then you can raise the door and finish nailing it without as much risk of an errant hammer strike on the door.

Anyone see holes in my idea?
