No roofing materials section of the forum? I'll post here...
We had some wind damage to our asphalt (onyx black) roof shingles. This has created an opportunity for us to replace the heat soaking black shingles with something different.
We were originally thinking of white asphalt shingles, but we are afraid of roof algae making it look awful (we have some North facing roof areas.) There are algae resistant shingles, but the warranty is not great on the algae resistance part of the shingle.
There are some Energy Star rated shingles available (like Owens Corning Duration Premium Cool shingles) in medium shades with .25 Initial Solar Reflectance. I'm not sure if this is significantly better than a standard Duration shingle with a similar shade (although the Premium may be a thicker shingle.)
Any suggestions on shingles? Am I failing to consider other materials or better installation options that would help with energy efficiency? Location is SW Virginia. Budget won't allow for much more than that of replacement Premium asphalt shingles.
Thanks!

Check out Atlas Roofings Pinnacle Brand Shingle. They actually just increased the warranty to a LifeTime Warranty instead of the typical 35 year on their Architectural shingle. |

Have you ever noticed that shingles are free of algae that are below galvanized flashing? This leads me to believe that installing zinc strips of metal along the ridge line would keep the shingles below free of organic growth. Anyone have any experience with this concept? If this idea will work, then lighter color shingles could be used more often. |

Installers have told us that many shingle companies are following suit with the lifetime warranty. The Duration shingles we are looking at are lifetime too, but prorated down to 20% after 41 years. Guess that is better than zero. :-) The algae warranty is 10 years, but prorated after the first year. Nothing after 10 years. I'll look up the zinc strips. Have you used them? I also read that copper works, but zinc would probably look better with the shades from white to gray that we are considering. |

Brindasbaby,
Thanks for posting about shingle shield zinc strips. I did not know a product already existed for this application. |

Has anyone used a radiant barrier with roof shingles?
- never mind. It appears that an airspace would be required.
