After several years of planning and delays due to a couple of total rehabs, (houses, not me 😜), we're breaking ground this month on what should be our final resting place above ground. At 9200 degree days, we are using Alpen fiberglass, and are planning on mounting them inside the opening. Most windows will sit inside ICFs, but the smaller top floor will be framed with 2x6 and 2" eps on the exterior. If I am using EIFS, is it possible to get by without a sill by using a cove base trim up against the window, and sealing that joint with silicone, and running the EIFS over the trim? I see this type of look a lot here in the southwest, but am unsure how it is done. And if I was going to run cultured stone up to the bottom opening, I'm thinking I need some sort of sill to bridge the joint. Thoughts? ,

Have you checked with Alpen? They may have a detail drawing that shows something similar to what you are wanting to do...

Typical building envelope finish is from bottom to top with each successive layer overlapping the next lower layer. I would say that yes you should have the window sill/flashing overlap or extend out over the top of the cultured stone layer. This is also called a brickmould.

I couldn't find anything on Alpen's site. But I have decided to put in a stone sill. Brickmould isn't the same as the sill. It's what normally runs down the sides and at the top. For for the clean look I want, I'll run stucco cove on the sides and top
