I have a small ranch (1800 sq/ft) that I've been working on. The house has a main floor that is above a conditioned/heated basement and an unconditioned garage (22'w x 24'd).

I installed in the joist bays suspended tube radiant heat 1" from the subfloor, a double foil staple-in radiant barrier 2" below the pex tube and finally R13 fiberglass rolls (paper side up).

My question is regarding the unheated garage ceiling. Originally I was going to use 5/8th sheetrock for the ceiling to stop some sound, but it's my understanding the R value is about .55 - I'm considering using 1.5" EPS board @ R5.78. Additional cost would be ~$4 per board and I would plan on painting them white. It's a garage I use heavily so it needs to reflect light well.

Has anyone done this or do you have a better/cheaper material you can recommend? I am just trying to make the home efficient, save on heating costs and be more comfortable. Location is Long Island if that is relevant.

The eps isn't a bad idea, but you still need to cover it with 5/8" sheetrock to meet fire code..
