I'd be disinclined to give business to a random Chinese vendor on Alibaba.

Preference would be for local or national so I can actually hold their feet to the fire if there's a problem.

Trying to get recalcitrant vendors from China to honor their commitments is like pulling teeth, without painkillers, via a colonoscopy...with a tunnel boring machine.

They'll promise and promise and take your money and act sympathetic. And let you twist in the wind.

I think that's a bit extreme there Dilettante ........ There are some very good manufactures producing good products that are used in high end residential and commercial projects around the world. Check out some of these exotic high end resorts around the world and you will notice Mahogany, Teak wood and other exotic wood windows and doors....... the general contractors are buying there high end windows from China for far less than they can buy lets say a Anderson Window LMAO ....... You can get for example french Teak wood windows for very attractive prices. I have a inquiry in for one Chinese company to get a idea of price which will includes tariffs custom fees and shipping to the USA. I will let you know what I find out.

Well, looks like you can order a free sample and check it out for yourself: https://doorwingroup.en.alibaba.com/productgrouplist-802688478/FREE_SAMPLE.html?spm=a2700.8304367.0.0.J4Ytt6 U Value of around 0.8 to 1.8 is pretty terrible.

Yes U Value sucks but I'm looking at building a small French County Villa ...... American window manufacture charge a small fortune for windows like these. Even with a sucky U Value my plans are to make a large profit when I get ready to sell the home some years down the road ..... Highend Look sucky U Value the new home owners will never know and wont make that huge of a difference overall..... Its all about the overall look of the Home it will Be a SWEET build.

Wonder why your even posting on a Green Building forum if your OK with sucky window/door performance. Plenty of other sites for building "sweet" sucky performance houses that only concentrate on the overall look to maximize a quick flip profit.

Extreme? No.
Harsh? Yeah.

Let's just say that it's a decade and more of dealing with Chinese vendors and production facilities.
Because of it, I've had one product line delayed THREE YEARS (once over BS and twice taking my money, KNOWING they weren't going to delive), then had the production facility keep all the molds and models we provided them with. Even AFTER paying a ransom. Leaving said product line in limbo unless we wish to retool EVERYTHING.

But if all you care about is aesthetics, buy whatever.

I just hope it doesn't come back to bite you.

I'm seriously considering solid wood windows form Shunda Moser. I'm normally very wary of Chinese windows but these look to be manufactured using the highest quality equipment, practices, materials and hardware. They advertise being a joint Sino-German venture which lends credence to them making quality windows. Just looking at from a pure technical standpoint they hit all the checkboxes:

-Laminated, finger-jointed, quarter-sawn hardwood frame and sash.
-German seals and gaskets
-German hardware
-German Glue
-Sikkens stain
-many low u-value glazing options
-double or true triple pane
-European warm-edge spacers
-humidity controlled wood storage
-ISO standards, Intertek certifications, Passive House certification

Doorwin also looks pretty good but they focus on wood-clad Aluminum windows while Moser do aluminum-clad wood windows. I'm going to order samples from both companies and do a comparison. I'm hoping I can have my cake and eat it to. It would sure save me a lot of money vs the Marvins I was going to go with. I think the Moser windows especially might be better than what Marvin can produce. If anyone else has experience with these two companies or other Chinese companies I'd love to hear your feedback especially concerning the import process.

Following up with my previous post I've gotten quotes for sample window corners from Shunda Moser and Doorwin. Shunda Moser wanted $180 (wood window with an aluminum clad exterior) and Doorwin wants $78.60 for the same. Initially I was planning on ordering samples from both companies but it cost more than I expected so I just went with Doorwin. Also, Moser didn't accept PayPal at the time and I wanted to avoid doing a wire transfer which costs $45 in fees. I ordered the sample corner and a sample tilt-turn window for $411 in red oak. If someone else wants to order a Shunda sample we can work together to do a comparison.

Btw, someone previously mentioned that Doorwin's u-value's were really bad. This is not true. The u values they post are in metric units so you need to convert them to Imperial units. Once you do that you'll see that their best u-values are 0.14 which is excellent.

Hi reli3d, Did you go ahead with the purchase? If so, how did it go? I was contemplating doing the same. I've seen threads about people thinking about buying from Alibaba, windows, flooring, etc. But most don't have a follow up as to success or not. Anyway, I hope it went well if you did.

I ordered and received the window sample and corner from Doorwin. I must say the build quality is outstanding. 5MM thick tempered glass, solid oak frame and sash, Roto, MACO and Hoppe hardware and Swisspacer. Zobel/Rhencoll stain. They sent me a RAL color swatch kit and different wood stain samples too. The only issue is that they don't have NFRC certification yet but they're working on it. They're currently having units tested by NAMI. I take back what I said about the .14 u value though. The double pane tilt turn is probably closer to .26 but that's just an estimate until the test results come back. Air sealing is EXCELLENT though. There are like six seals on my sample. Doorwin advertises four but I see six so I'm not sure how they count them.

The powdercoating on the aluminum cladding could be improved. I gave them some suggestions for making sure the finish is better. It's not bad at all but if you look at it from a few inches away you can see some bumps on the surface. It looks perfect from a couple feet away though so probably not a big deal.

Dealing with Doorwin's sale's manager Vincent has been a pleasure. He responds really quickly to emails. Also, their in house designers can draw up some CAD drawings quickly too and they haven't charged me for any design work.

The window I received is the standard Euro style that requires a brickmold. It's installed using screws through the jamb. Vincent says they're working on a tilt turn with a nailing fin for the U.S. market. The aluminum cladding continues past the window frame and transitions into the nailing fin which is a nice touch to ensure that bulk water never gets to the wood frame. The aluminum cladding is thermally broken and spaced off the frame using standoffs for ventilation. NICE!

One thing to be aware of: the window corner is free but the shipping cost can be expensive due to the weight of the item. My sample full window (I think it's like a 2x3) is so heavy that it's hard to carry around. It was like $800 for the sample window and corner with the majority of the cost due to air freight.

I committed to purchasing their windows and doors. I designed some doors and they're custom building them. Solid wood and aluminum clad to match the windows with a bottom retractable seal at the bottom from Germany. I'll keep everyone updated once I receive them which unfortunately won't be until probably January/Feb 2019.

I bought an iron door on Alibaba and it is great. The Chinese have been working with iron for over 2000 years so I thought it was a good chance they knew what they were doing. I shipped it UPS Air Cargo. Total for the door and frame is 600lbs. It is a work of art. Is it the most efficient door? no. Do I care? no.

IS there a way to show us a photo of your door? It sounds like an amazing value. My doors are 2" thick solid wood slabs with aluminum cladding, 3/4 lite with double pane, argon filled IGUs and german bottom seal were only $1000 a door and that includes a really nice mortise lockset! A similar door in Seattle would probably cost me at least $4K.

Anyone have any updates on this? Did anyone receive a full order of Chinese windows?

I've got a few triple pane tilt and turn sample corners, including a couple from Doorwin. I ordered a full 36x60 window from them to get an idea of the fit and finish. I'm no expert but it looks to be very well made. I may post pictures later if anyone wants to see anything specific.

Did you end up ordering all your windows? I received a sample from Doorwin, quality seems great. Just curious if you did full order and if everything went smoothly.

It likely comes down to the quality of the materials. Frame material, hardware used for hinges/locks/tracks, insulation in frame, weather seals, wind resistance, desiccant in glass, etc. Door glass needs to be tempered too. Do they list any building codes they adhere to? I’ve only bought small items (car parts like back up sensors) from China, and I’ve never been wowed and mostly disappointed. By the way, take a look at https://primestucco.com/ - I’m a big fan of stucco design.
