smear? splash pool? "most stuff slides off"? wow, this conversation has taken an blechhhy turn...

I had assumed we would install dual flush toilets when we built, but after reading this I'm having a few reservations.

I think it's American Standard that has a single flush "ultra low" volume toilet that uses something like 1.2 gpf. Without getting into too many personal habits, I'm going to guess that the average ratio of 'one-sey' to 'two-sey' is 2:1. If we assume 1.6 gpf and .8 gpf for the dual flush, that averages out to just under 1.1 gpf. If you can get away with 1.2-something and not worry about some of the issues mentioned here, it seems to me that it's worth it. Net savings would be about 12 oz. per flush with a dual flush - doesn't seem worth the potential negatives..

Any flaws in my logic?

I personaly have not had good luck with american standard (Poor quality control)  I would chose a toto drake and go with the 1.28 gal model if you feel like the extra pint saved is worth it.  I have the toto drake 1.6 gal flush and it is very good.

After re-evaluating the options, we decided to go with a Toto 1.28gpf for our second bathroom.  It seems like no matter where you look, or who you talk to, that Toto is the most-recommended brand.  We ordered an Eco Whitney, which is basically the Drake with a different aesthetic.  The splash pool is much larger and I don't expect any problems with flushing.

Toto's dual-flush version is the Aquia, and it would be worth considering.  I talked to someone who has the Aquia as well as two Drakes in their house and they were happy with them all.  the splash pool is a little smaller on the Aquia (than with the Drake), but much larger than what we have with our Caroma Sidney Smart.

We are also thinking of installing the AQUS greywater system in one bathroom...curious if anyone has/is using this system?

From a user of a Kohler bladder toilet for 13 years, never had a problem. The one draw back - if you visit the facility at night, your flush may wake your mate.

We installed two TOTO Ultimate 1.6 gpf toilets and were very happy with them. Decided to try Aquia dual flush in the powder room. Big mistake. Cleanliness factor as described above is definitely an issue. In our new home we are going to the new TOTO Ultimates that are only 1.28 gpf.

We do get a touch more smear I guess. My wife is pretty clean you know and she hasn't complained though. But the sides of out Toto are steep and most stuff slides off. I really haven't used the brush that much. Often times I use the small volume flush for a small stool and get away with it.

The Eco Quantum we have from Mansfield is also a dual flush Shawn but it has a high splash pool/water level. You might like this model better. I don't like it as much because it uses more water on the 'small flush' than our Toto and I can not really get away with the small flush for stool on the Eco Quantum - but with the higher water level on this one we never really get 'smearing' any more that with a conventional toilet.

I hope this helps. Overall I've been really happy to have both of them - its nice to teach our kids about the practical little things you can do to make a difference!
