I'm in the process of room addition construction. Block walls are going up. I was planning on just an evaporative cooler for cooling. I'm in hot, dry s. Arizona where these work well most of the time, but not well in humid July-August rainy season. I thought before construction gets to the point where adding an A/C unit will be impractical/expensive, I would explore the idea of having a room unit as backup for the evap. The room will be ~1000 sq. ft. & according to Consumer Reports calculator, would need a unit 15,300 +/- 800 BTU/Hr. I was thinking a through the wall room unit, not central, and definitely something energy star rated. I don't need a heat pump system--the room is going to have radiant floor heating. Any recommendations on brands, models or other ideas that I haven't thought of? Thanks so much.

Are you planning on any insulation on those block walls? If so, what kind and how much?

Have you looked into ductless mini-split heat pumps? Google for more info. There are some very efficient units available.
