I just decided to change my diverter spout in both bathrooms , in my bedroom and the one the kids share. I haven't measured the amount but am willing to guess almost as much water is coming out the bath spout as the shower head wasting alot of water and the energy to heat it. I did a little online research and some tests have been done that show there are very few of these spouts that dont leak at least some. In my mind they shouldnt leak at all. Here is a link to the study http://www.taitem.com/wp-content/uploads/Diverter-Valve-Tech-Tip-2011.7.20.pdf I took my spout off so I cold order or buy one and am having a hard time finding the one I need to order as it is not in stock at Lowes and since I dont speak plumber lingo am having a hard time finding someone who can translate what I say to thier (plumber supply ) language. I took pictures and will upload them so hopefully someone here can tell me what I have so I can order. I will describe what I have here now,, My spout un-screws counter clock-wise. The pipe stub is 3 3/4 inches long from the shower wall. It looks to have a 3/4 nipple on it. Is that standard? The home was built in 1994 so things could have changed. I would appreciate any help and as I said I will post pictures when I can. Thanks

If you are using Internet Explorer, then try this to make paragraphs:

In IE select Tools, Compatibility View to turn it on.

This is why I insist on valved connections between shower head and tub spout, not cheesy + leaky diverter spouts. Code should be changed to prohibit them since they inevitably waste water and energy.

Of course the Coalition to Continue Horribly Wasteful Construction Practices So As to Save $10 per home will resoundingly oppose any such common sense measures!

A tub spout with divertor leaks in order to drain water from the atmospheric side of the valve when closed, as this may be trapped and stagnant for an interminable amount of time and more importantly to allow the tub filler to operate on each new cycle so the operator doesn't get showered when looking for a bath.

Besides, it is cheaper to divert at the tub fill than any other method to date.

Surely we have bigger fish to fry. If you are getting down to the nanowatt, you might want to start taking bathes; with a friend; and let the bath water sit in the tub until it reaches ambient.

I appreciated the information. We have a cheesey diverter that puts as much water out the spout as it does the shower head. While it may not be a big savings item, I'd like more volume at my shower head. It's more of an irritant. I was looking in one of the big box stores for a replacement and found they are all junk form china. Yes it's a small potatoes item but every little bit helps in the long run.
