A lot of folks are advocating heat pump water heaters due to their efficiency. Because most people don't have a large enough mechanical room to accommodate one, or an efficient enough home heating system to efficently handle the added load, they are putting them in unheated garages, even in primarily heating environments such as here in Central Oregon. I see issues of potential freezing, loss of efficiency,large standby loss, due to the cold environment, and loss of efficiency due the longer pipe runs to the existing use areas. It is claimed that the efficiency loss due to the cold location isn't that great. But has anyone ever calculated the total effect of the above losses? I would be curious. For the above reasons we opted to go the Marathon route instead.
