India produces an enormous amount of municipal solid waste - some estimates put it at about 30 million T a year. That's an enormous amount of waste from which value could be created. But not so fast! It is not so easy to create value from waste, thanks to the ways we "spill" waste.
"the city of Delhi spends the most per capita amongst Indian cities in solid waste management. I understand the city spends Rs 431 (per year?) per capita. The city also has a manpower deployment of 3.5 people per 1000 population on solid waste management."
That would be about $10 per capita per year. Assuming the rest of India spends similar amounts, that would be over $10 billion spent on solid waste management alone in India - money that can be used for much better puroposes.
What do you think?
