Windows are a distinctive feature in any home. In most conventional houses, however, windows are the weak link in terms of energy efficiency and cold-weather comfort. During the winter, a typical window loses up to 10 times more heat than an equivalent area of an outside wall. Windows can account for up to 30 percent of the heat loss from a conventional home, adding significantly to heating costs. Drafts, window condensation and mould can also affect your comfort and your home’s indoor air quality.

charlenej-

Your question is too general for anyone to provide a reasonable answer.  In a heating-dominated climate in a sunny area, you want high-solar gain windows, while in South Florida that approach would result in misery.  High-performance depends on the climate conditions.  You need to define your geographic area, including a zip code, and your existing shading conditions, and state whether you are building a new house or retrofitting an old one.

Check out HH Windows & Doors, they manufacture high performance windows and doors here in the US. They focus mostly on European window systems that are robust and energy efficient. Highly recommended!

Or any tilt-turn window for that matter. For numerous reasons the engineering is above and beyond any traditional window system
