We bought a Gen 1 GE GEOSPRING Hybrid Hot Water Heater in 2010 from Lowes for $1600. It lasted exactly 3.5 years and then had a major failure of the evaporator coil. This is a known and common problem with the early GEOSPRING units and GE parts warranty is 10 years so they shipped an evaporator coil, dryer and valve. Luckily, we bought the extended warranty, as the cost to replace the evap coil in my area was almost $300. The HVAC tech had nothing good to say about these units, except that they are poorly made. Posting on GE Appliances Facebook page got no response either. I am calling for GE to do a RECALL of these known faulty units. But this should also serve as a warning to those who might want to buy one of these units... would you knowingly pay $1600 for a water heater with a 3 year lifespan, when you could buy 5 regular 9 year water heaters for that same price? Also, be aware that if you install one of these without 6" of clearance at the rear of the unit, then the repair person will NOT be able to service it. This cost me an extra $150 to have a plumber add extenders and move the unit so it could be repaired. Several other GEOSPRING owners have posted about the premature failures of these units on Lowes, Home Depot and Amazon websites. If you had one that failed, please add your comments to this thread.

I actually thought I wanted one, but if you look at Amazon, it appears that the failure rate is very high and consistant as to the problem.

My understanding is that the most recent generation is greatly improved over the 1st generation units. If you can still purchase the 10 year labor warranty for $100 and your electric rates are high it still may be worth a whorl.
