Hello all,
Am in the process of building a home in Iowa and plan on installing a mini split system for a/c. There will be radiant heat floors for heat. This is a one story, two bedroom house on a slab. Was originally planning on a 12,000 BTU wall unit in the main living area and smaller units in each bedroom. However, because of the rather open layout of the home, was wondering if I could get away with just an 18,000 BTU unit in the main living area and some ceiling fans in bedrooms and kitchen for air circulation. Thoughts?

Tell us more about the house? Basement? Slab? Wood framed? Insulation amount? I would want one in the master and main area for a min....you would have to leave the other bedroom door open to cool it. What side of the house is south facing? Why do you want heated floors? |

Like Newbostonconst alluded to, before you can design the cooling/heating system, you first need to accomplish a heat loss/gain analysis of the building (e.g., ACCA Manual J or ASHRAE). The results of this heat loss/gain analysis will depend on your location and the materials used to construct your building. If you will use hydronic radiant floor heating, this needs to be a room-by-room heat loss analysis in order to properly design the system. We have heat loss/gain analysis and hydronic radiant floor heating design calculators on our website if you are so inclined. I would think 2 mini split heads would be more than adequate for your 986 SF single level home. This mini split system could satisfy both your cooling and heating needs, but needs to be sized based on your heat loss/gain analysis. I am wondering where you plan to put a TV in your great room? |

There are multi-zone mini splits. I am planning to go with a 4 or 5 zone unit for my home but might only install 3 zones initially. If all of your wall units are close together this allows you to size your system for your total load and will probably be less oversized than two independent systems. |
