I need to mitigate for radon but don't want to increase the energy usage in the home with an active system. I've found conflicting reports of the effectiveness of passive mitigation in remodels. Does anyone have any experience with this? The home was built in the 1930's; has a finished, daylight basement; and a 4' crawlspace under half of the basement that has a vapor barrier in it. The radon levels in the basement tested just over the EPA's guidelines.
Thanks!

Hi,
A passive radon system can reduce levels by about 30%. This applies if your house has a drain tile system that could be connected to. With a level of near 4pCi/L covering the crawl space with a 6 mil pastic and carfully sealing the edges to the walls could reduce the levels in the home to your satisfaction. So a possible number would be an assumption that half your basement is now sealed (the crawl space) and at half of 30% your radon level could drop to below 3.5pCi/L. If this is not acceptable an active system takes as little as 20 watts to power a fan.
