I'm glad I found this forum, but I'm having a hard time reconciling some of the recommendations with my particular situation. I'm planning to build a stick-frame house in Ottawa/Ontario (cold). We just finalized the floor plans and elevation drawings. Exterior walls will use 2x6 with plywood sheating. Exterior finishes consist mostly of stucco (synthetic) and thin stone veneer. From what I've been reading on all the forums and other sites, one of the recommended ways to insulate the house is to use 2" of XPS rigid foam on the exterior. I was planning to use the 2" XPS everywhere on the exterior, above and below grade. Interior insulation between the 2x6 studs would have been regular batt insulation. However, I can't figure out how this would work with the stucco and thin veneer exterior... My understanding is that stucco needs to be applied over 1.5" of white bead board foam, so how would this foam be applied over the 2" of XPS ? Same with the thin stone veneer...can this be applied directly over the 2" XPS ? At a minimum, I'm assuming that one (or two) water barriers (but not vapor) barriers need to be applied between the XPS and the stucco/thin stone veneer ? Sorry for rambling on... The other alternative is to use spray foam (closed cell) on the inside cavity of the 2x6 walls, but this doesn't solve the thermal bridging throughout the studs. Hopefully someone can help... I don't believe that this is correct. For example. Dow Stuccomate. I wouldn't worry about water effecting the foam but I would look into using a drainage plane.
